Hana’s Hurting Heart

Hana-chan (Hana Iwakura) is a beautiful 5 month old baby girl who has been diagnosed with "Dilated Cardiomyopathy" shortly after her birth.

There is no medical treatment, and her parents have been told that Hana may not even make it to tomorrow.

She had to faced near-death crises many times during complicated treatments, and conquered them strongly with her small body each time.

Exceeding expectations, she has continued to live with a pediatric artificial auxiliary heart. However, this device has side effects of cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction. The only permanent method of treatment is to do a heart transplant. There have only been 4 successful cases of heart transplants don’t on children less than 6 years of age, and the probability of little Hana to accept and adapt to the new heart is against odds, but her parents don’t want to give up. As long as Hana continues to fight for her life, they want to give her a chance to live and made the decision to search for a donor and conduct the transplant for Hana overseas.

With the close support of doctors at the hospital in Shizuoka, Osaka, Hana is very lucky to have Columbia University in New York accept her for the heart transplant surgery. However, insurance and government financial support to cover the medical expenses for a surgery of this magnitude overseas is not available. In addition to medical expenses, Hana’s parents also need to take into account airfare and living costs for their stay in the US, which is a heavy burden for one family to bear.

Hana has been bravely fighting with her condition every day, waiting patiently for the day when she can finally get her heart surgery done. We, as long-time friends of Hana’s parents, decided to set up “Operation Save Hana” and have started setting up charity activities to raise support for Hana’s family. We are committed to making every possible effort to save the life of this beautiful baby girl and to see the Iwakura family live a long peaceful life together at home. We ask for your kindness and support in helping them through donation and/or participating in our activities.

Thank you so much for taking time to visit our site, to learn about Hana, and for thinking of Hana and her family.

Hana’s Hurting Heart

There have only been 4 successful cases of heart transplants done on children less than 6 years of age, and the probability of little Hana successfully accepting and adapting to the new heart is low, but her parents don’t want to give up. As long as Hana continues to fight for her life, they want to give her a chance to live. Therefore, they have made the decision to seek a donor and conduct the transplant for Hana overseas, as this process of organ transplantation for infants is fairly new and not widely practiced in Japan. Facing this difficult reality at home, children like Hana have no choice but to seek a heart transplant overseas.
